Bit of CG-12 trivia---In a place called Rhodes Canyon--Heart of White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico---There is the CG-12 Aft TALOS launcher. The Navy converted the operational Talos birds to supersonic targets (Name:VANDAL) and they were flown at White Sands for several years. I was working on the Navy MIRACL (High power laser) during the late '80s and early '90s and we shot down a Vandal in 1988 or 89.

Served on columbus from Feb '69 to Aug '70. Yeoman. Entered Navy in Nov '68 and first set of orders was PVR duty DaNang Vietnam. I said....... WHAT? No,No, I'm going over to the med--my brother (Terry) was on the Columbus and he had requested brother duty. The order was approved but got delayed so I hung around San Diego for a few weeks sweeping, etc. The Navy flew me over to France where I caught the ship. Terry was a yeoman also and entered in '66. I remember the 1st day most------did NOT salute the officer on deck when I first got there and I got my ass chewed good. I really liked the Columbus.

In January of 1975, our ship, the USS Newport News (CA 148)made her last "cruise" under her own power from Pier 7, NOB Norfolk, to St. Helena Pier in south Norfolk to begin her decommissioning. When we arrived the USS Columbus was there in the last month of her own decom. Those of our respective crews unfortunate enough not to enjoy apartments on the beach, shared less than luxurious (no stars!)accomodations for that month on a floating ghetto called an APL. ("Auxillary Personnel Living", I think.) I shall never forget how one of the Columbus's crew, a seaman, supplemented his income by hustling me in chess. I don't think I won a single game! I didn't mind, however. I looked upon it as paying for chess lessons from a superior player. I wouldn't mind, however, the chance to recoup some of my losses though! If that Columbus crewman remembers me and those days in Norfolk, and would like to play by email or snail mail, then please drop me a note and tell me what I looked like then. (I want him and not some even better ringer!) I'm rested; I'm tanned; I'm ready! Great site for one great ship! Smooth sailing always, Bob Schott SA USS Newport News (CA 148) 5/74-6/75

I served 1967 thru 1969 as a signalman with many fine folks. I am now in Iowa where there is very fiew bodies of water. I spent many (20) years in Chicago after the Navy. Sad to hear that the Columbus was scrapped, however, I realize she was on her second life when I was on board. Does anyone remember the cruise in the Med in 1967? Any Signalmen from those years Still around?

Is there a contact person who could possibly send a list of those shipmates who served aboard the Columbus during the years between approximately 1953-1958 and also who from those dates have attended reunions? I'm trying to encourage/convince my uncle to attend your next reunion and thought that he would be inclined to do so if he was able to recognize familiar shipmates who were taking part in your activities. Jim McFerrin & I reported aboard the USS Columbus CG-12 in Feb. 1963. She was in Bremerton, WA. I recall visiting many places: Seattle, Vancouver, San Francisco, Long Beach, & San Diego. But, the very best event was when the USS Columbus CG-12 sailed from San Diego on 5 August 1964 for a WestPac cruise. We were in Hawaii (11-13 August). Guam was our next stop (23-24 August). We arrived in Subic Bay on 28 August,1964. Columbus visited Hong Kong three times (24-28 Sept) (16-21 Oct) & (31 Dec-3 Jan 1965). We visited Yokosuka (3 times), Sasebo (2 times), Kagoshima (3-7 Dec), Kure (16-18 Dec), & Beppu (18-21 Dec). We arrived back in San Diego on 6 Feb 1965. I left the Navy & the USS Columbus CG-12 in August 1965. I got to know many fine shipmates aboard "The Tall Lady". I look back on my time aboard her as some of the best years of my life. I wear my USS Columbus CG-12 cap every day. I would enjoy hearing from any shipmates from the good old days aboard the finest cruiser in the Navy.

Was on the Columbus in OE division from Oct 68-Aug 69. Made a great med cruise and took lots-o-pictures. I remember spending my first week working on the SPS-30 with Furmam A. Powell (aka John Wayne) but got demoted to R-390s when I couldn't figure our where the on/off switch was. I did find the best place for a nap - between the bulkhead and the SPS 30 equipment panel. Have lots of pictures of those days (and even some of this sites author). Wouldn't mind having them put up on the site.

CG-12 Plank Owner, on board Oct.63 to Oct.65, communications dept. boot ensign under Mike Blouin, finally got religion and lucky, made 1st division officer and got to drive the boat in Westpac. Greatest memories were the sights of the Olympics transiting the Straits of Juan De Fuca, San Francisco from under the Golden Gate Bridge, Hong Kong while rounding East Lama, "Guam is good", "No go Olongapo", the volcano erupting as we dropped the hook in Kagoshima harbor, and best of all, a few months after I had gotten out and returned home to New Orleans, the sight of the macks towering above the warehouses lining the Mississippi as I drove downtown to see the visit ship Columbus, and my old room mate Oly Maslenikov standing the quarterdeck watch. Some of the best times and best people I have ever known.

While I did not serve on the Columbus, my father James G. Warner Sr., did. He was assigned to the S-2 Division and was on the Columbus from 51 through 54. He played on the Columbus softball team the Discover's and had the nickname of "Pop Warner." My father passed away December 24, 2001. Before his passing, I had the privledge of attending three Columbus Reunions with him. The Norfolk, Boston and Kentucky reunions. Those reunions and being able to spend time with his fellow shipmates, like Publio Zampedro, Don Samhat, Ray Beatty, John Grimm, Dick Krueger and others meant the world to him. If any other shipmates recall my father - I would be interested in hearing from you. Great job - John.

I should have stayed in the Navy. Now I travel all over Eastern Europe and pay for every inch of the way! I cant imagine why the Navy has difficulty recruiting young and educated people. Now that I am older (by a lot!) I have to admit; my journeys aboard GG-12 are absolutely among the most memorable experiences of my life. I encountered my first BLT at the Naval Shipyard, Norfolk, VA. The U.S.S. Columbus was in dry dock at the time and we often bought our food from mobile venders. We called them gee-dunks, (SP hard g) I bought my first car, a VW Beatle, in Norfolk.) Didnt have a clue regarding standard shift yet I drove all over Norfolk. I believe know that there are a lot of young, smart, and talented young people who are missing out on what can only be described as a phenomenal experience. Too bad for them and lucky me. I was really surprised to find the Columbus web page. I serve abourd the Columbus from the fall of 71 to the end of the Med Cruise of 74 (I think it was early spring). I served as a messcook and then went to E Div as an IC striker. Doug, I remember the time we piped IC3 Bob ???? over the side on the 1MC. They sure were looking for someone to blame. We had a real great group of men in the IC Gang. Tom Akers, Rosco Burlingame, John Harwood, John Chesshir, Prothero, and Van. We all came on board as Fireman and left as IC2's. After I Left the Columbus I went to Sub School. In addition to the Columbus, I serve on the Greenling, Minneaoplis-St Paul and Dolphin. I also servce as an Instructor at Sub School, The Naval Research Lab at Pt Mugu and (OUCH) a recrutier in El Paso, Texas. Thanks for the Web page and the oportunties to revist some found memories

I remember the tall lady when she was at Norfolk down near the aircraft carriers and the Newport News. Couldn't believ how tall she was. As a signalman it must have beeen quite a view. I remember the Chicago off Nam and I saw the Albany in ;later years. I felt the Columbus always got shortchanged and she was scrapped way too soon. Dan

Great job!! I served aboard the Tall Lady from sometime in 1962 until I left the ship on emergency leave while we were sitting in Hong Kong in late '64. This was after the 2nd Gulf of Tonking incident when VAdm Byrd was the flag aboard. I was SM2 at the time and you can see my handywork (i.e. coffee cup board) on part of this site. Good grief I had forgotten all about the board! I saw a tremendous material and physical change in the old girl; I suffered thru those God-awful se trials in the Straits of Juan de Fuca when the Navy suddenly realized we were TOO top heavy! I remember the first deployment and we had a cartoonist's son aboard as part of the flag (and for the life of me I cannot recall his name). I DEFINITLY remember him when he came aft of the bridged and barfed all over the signal gang!!! I also recall how we laid to in Hong Kong so the crew could go over the side to scrub her sides and paint. It was a great ship and a great crew. Those of you in this timeframe remember when we had the big to-do about the elevator? Unauthorized personnel were riding it and they finally had to station a Marine on it so as to keep us off of it. That's ok, we would just run up the ladders enroute to the bridge and punch every elevator button we came to. I'm afraid the poor Marine spent a lot of time riding the elevator from below decks to the 0-12!!Our signal gang was made up of SMC Delbert NELSON, SMC FIELDS, SM! Jon HUTCHISON, SM2 Robert SHOEMAKER, SM3 ARNTSON and our Signal Officer, Ens. HAFER. I recall one night u/w and we quickly learned that Mr. HAFER was a bird lover when we stuffed a dead sparrow we found lying on the deck, into one of the bunnys (pneumatic tubes) and sent it to his desk in Comm. If there's anyone out there who recalls our stop in SFran and our first cruise or who recalls my shipmates on the bridge please pass this on. I was transferred after I reached CONUS after I found out I made SM1 and the billets were full in the Signal Gang. Sent me to the USS PRITCHETT (DD-561) which I promptly swapped off of and went to the USS FLOYD COUNTY (LST-762). Spent over a year in VN aboard the FLOYD. Went on to change rates when the MA rate opened up and eventually was commissioned as a CWO. Retired in Oct 1988 as the Security Officer at NAS Miramar, SD. Currently a Chief of Police in NE Oregon. Love to hear from anyone who recalls our antics! A.C. ANDERSON

Great site! I enjoyed the pictures. I served onboard 1970-72 in the Supply Department, S-4 Division. I was promoted to DKCS while onboard. My dad passed away a few years ago (Age 90) and one of my fondest memories is when he came onboard for a tour and had lunch in the Chief's Mess. This was the "high-light" of his life and he often talked about his tour onboard the USS COLUMBUS (CG-12) and the Chief's Mess in particular.

Left the Columbus for 6 weeks so Admiral could do flight ops on the Shangri La. Our compartment flooded while we on the carrier and many of us lost our MED Cruise Books. Are there out there? I had a blast on the Columbus and was treated great as a guest for the year and a half stationed on her. Great site - great memories. Will join Assoc soon.

I reported aboard CG-12 in Feb. 63 at Bremerton. I`d just completed Talos "C" school at Mare Island,CA. Have "fond" memories of being seasick along with at least half the crew. Enjoyed my years aboard and the great people I worked with. I left the Columbus in Aug. 1965 when my enlistment was over. Went back to college. Got my degree at San Francisco State. Then got my teaching credential. Taught public school for 27 years. Retired to a small town in Northern CA. I wear my USS Columbus CG-12 cap every day! I belong to the USS Columbus Vets. Assoc., VFW Life member,USN Cruiser Sailors Assn., and the American Legion. My Navy days were great. I really enjoyed my years aboard "The Tall Lady". Would enjoy hearing from "old shipmates". This website dedicated to the Columbus is simply too wonderful for words.

Served on CG-12 late 60s - early 70s in OE division (with John Grosvenor, by the way). Was a HAM operator at the ship's station. Maintained the AN/SPS-30 and AN-SPS-10 radar systems. Wondering whatever happened to Jonathan Kilpatrick - AN-SPS-43) and his brother as well as our TACAN expert, I will remember his name later... I know a couple of other shipmates that I will contact and send here.

What a pleasant surprise - finding John Grosvenor's web site dedicated to the USS Columbus. The site, in essence, is a fitting tribute to a great warship and the crews who manned her. John has done an excellent job constructing the multifaceted web site. John - many thanks for all the hard work!!! I was an ET on the Columbus in '69 and '70. Thirty years have gone by too fast. However, the years have not dimmed my memories of the great "Tall Lady." I was extremely enamored with the ship and crew, especially those guys in the OE Division. Our division had the good fortune of coming under the tutelage of ETC Jerry Deal. Chief Deal had a philosophy that encouraged much camaraderie in our division: at sea, we work hard - in port, we play hard. We probably carried the latter to the extreme. Best wishes to all those Columbus "old salts!"

My father, David Goggin, served on the Columbus around 1969 - 70 as a Radioman. I have tried to convince him to look into the various reunions or just to try and find some old buddies, but he hasn't yet. If you knew him drop me a line. I'd love for him to get together with some old friends.

While I did not serve on board the Columbus I did however serve on board her sister ship, Albany CG-10. I had the good fortune to be a plankowner being there on that cold rainy day in the Boston naval Shipyard when the Albany was commissioned. I have enjoyed very much viewing the web site of the Columbus. It has brought back many pleasant memories of my days on board the Big A. I am a member of the Albany Association and look forward to the day when just possibly the two ships could have a joint reunion. you never know just maybe it will happen. Harold Batie Cruiser Sailor

I have heard many great stories from him, and your web site has allowed me to print off information, and pictures for Hal to add to his scrap album that his grandkids, have made for him. Hal is celebrating his 73rd birthday on Aug. 10, 1999 I am sure all the goodies, and facts we've collected will be enjoyed by him for years to come. I was looking on the web for a picture of a ship for a manual I was preparing at work and typed in the USS Columbus CG-12 and hit this site. I was really surprised to see a site dedicated to the Columbus. I served as a dental technician on the Tall Lady from 1968 to 1969. After getting out of the Navy, I used my GI Bill to get my undergraduate and graduate degree. I now work for the Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center at Port Hueneme as the Solid Waste/Recycling Program Manager. We provide compliance guidance to Navy and Marine Corps installations world-wide. My experiences on the USS Columbus have been helpful in my work. Ill have to search for the pictures I took while on the ship.

I came aboard the Columbus in June '66, my first duty station as a marine, served aboard 19 months as security at the talos doors, including 6 months as the orderly, bar tender and driver for Capt. L.J. Stecher, One of the finest men I have met at any time of my life, I wonder where he is now. I made a med cruise, a nato cruise, many carib. cruises and that cruise up the Miss. to N.O. I saw pictures of (a midshipman cruise, I believe). I haven't completely read this whole site yet but it's really great to see someone do it to remind us of what a great duty station it was, especially for a marine like myself, where at the time (the late 60s)the alternative could have produced a much different result from the fond memories I have of the Columbus. Good luck to one and all. Bob Faelten

I was a IC electrician serving temporary duty while awaiting nuclear power school when I served on the Columbus. As fate would have it, the Columbus was the only ship I was on. About a month after leaving her I received a medical discharge. I joined the ship's company a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving in 1968 and left around the end of February 1969. The last port I was in with the ship was Barcelona Spain. My experiences were excellent and I am very proud to tell people about them. I have a reprint of a watercolor painting of the Columbus titled "Deployment" hanging above my desk in my office. I still have a working jacket with the ship's patch stored away. My wife has stopped asking if I want to throw "that old thing" away. Thanks so much for putting forth the effort to make such a nice tribute to CG-12.

GREAT WEBSITE!! I reported aboard the USS Columbus (CG-12)in mid-1969 while the ship was in Norfolk, Va. The Tall Lady was my first sea command after making Chief Petty Officer and it couldn't have been a better opportunity to learn my new job. I became the Leading Chief of OE Division and was lucky enough to have a super Department Head (Mike Nash)and Division Officer (Cecil Decker) plus a really great bunch of ET's (including one named John Grosvenor.) I lived in the forward-starboard Chief's Quarters and enjoyed the "leadership advice" of all the old hands including BMCM Tucker, the Chief Master at Arms, GMCS Moritz and our "Number-One" BTCM Rosen. I was transfered after the next Med Cruise but for the rest of my career I compared all my ships to the Columbus. None could measure up. They were all good but there was no better ship - no finer crew, officers and men, than the Tall Lady during my service aboard. John - Thanks - And BRAVO_ZULU!!
