Allen McNelly's
1966 - 67 Mediterranean Cruisebook

This Cruisebook was "hand carried" from Sacramento, California, after visiting with Allen at RailFair99.
Allen, thank you for letting me borrow this piece of USS Columbus History for others to see and enjoy. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with you and RailFair99
John

Allen served on board the USS Columbus CG-12 from September 1966 until May 1968.
You can see Allen in the 1966-67 Cruisebook on Page 14.

(My first EMO, LTJG George Tyrrell can be seen right below Allen's Picture)
Allen can also be seen in the Lantmidtraron Cruisebook on Page 23 (Dept. Heads)
You can also see his fine pronouncement, on Page 54 , that he wrote about New Orleans.
And on Page 56 Allen believes that is himself (hat on), with Bosun Spidle,
at Special Sea Detail heading up the Ole Miss for New Orleans.

Allen reported aboard as CIC Officer (Combat Information Center)
and later was made a department head as 1st LT.
Allen McNelly retired from the Navy in 1969.
His present "duties" are husband, father and volunteer at the
California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, California.

That is where I meet Allen a couple of years ago.
I happen to decide to wear my Columbus hat into the California Railroad Museum on a very "quick look" during a lay-over at the Sacramento, CA. RR Station, just a block away (almost didn't do it because of a late train).
I was on a train trip with my Mother taking her to Denver for Christmas.
I walked by Allen (audio actually captured on my camcorder) and I heard
"Were you really on the Tall Lady". --- Yes, Mr. McNelly, I did and am sure glad we meet, Sir.
Talk about "chance meetings" -- I almost did not go into the museum, I almost didn't wear my hat ---- go figure.

One more comment. Allen told me that looking at the Lantmidtraron Cruisebook brought back memories such as when Bob Hope and Phyllis Diller put on a show on the fantail while we were at Ponce, Puerto Rica.
So, visitors, make sure YOU visit ALL the Cruisebooks for good memories.

I have included a picture taken on my video camera moments after meeting him.
As you see he is a real Railroad Buff!!!     (and proud of it    :-)

There are some great pictures of CG-12 in this cruise book!!
